The role of media in preserving identity and heritage A case study applied to the city of Mosul
Abstract
The study aimed to clarify the concept of media, its importance and role, define the concept of identity and its impact on society, clarify the meaning of heritage and its importance to any society, and focus on clarifying the role of media in preserving identity and heritage in the Mosul region. The study relied on the use of the descriptive analytical approach, as it is appropriate for the nature of the study, as it relied on describing and analyzing the concepts and phenomena of the study.
The study reached a set of results, the most important of which is that Mosul possesses an identity and heritage that distinguishes it from other cities despite the wars and disasters that have affected it. The media plays a major and important role in shaping the individual's knowledge, spreading ideas, disseminating new opinions, and providing the public with information, improving the quality and extent of awareness of the environment in which they live, in addition to its role in promoting social values and patterns and working to establish them. The media has the ability to influence public education and increase their awareness, and enhances the identity of the people of the homeland, and deepens their belonging and loyalty to their homeland. The media also plays a prominent role in protecting Mosul's heritage in light of the wars it has suffered, as it focuses on all cultural activities related to affirming identity and introducing heritage that take place in the Mosul region.
