The Struggle over Egypt Between Nur Al-Din and The Crusading King Amalric I According to the Arabic and Crusading Contemporary Sources
Abstract
The Jihad movement against the crusaders witnessed a turning point at the 560s A.H. when Nur Al-Din and Amalric I struggled for mastery over Egypt. Both leaders knew that Egypt is the key of the victory in their fatal conflict. Nur Al-Din send three campaigns to forestall Amalric plans to occupy Egypt. At the end, Shirkuh Nur Al-dins leader succeeded to secure the situation for Muslims.
The Aim of this research is to give an analytical and comparative study for both the Islamic and Crusading narratives of the above-mentioned showdown; Ibn Al-athir, Ibn Abi Tai and Al-Asfahai are the main historians that convey the Islamic point of view and at the opposite lie William of Tyre as the main representative of the crusading perspective of events.
