Abstract

Skepticism is one of the most important and prominent features of the poet Thomas Hardy, and it appeared to him early in the beginning of his poetic life. However, there are positive reasons that led him to this unhappy situation, for example his great and deep influence over Darwin's ideas when he published the book The Origin of Species in which he denies religion the story of the caliph mentioned in the Bible - in addition to his failure in his first marriage, which gave him a sense of frustration and loss of hope. There is an additional reason for life, which is the poverty that has accompanied his life for many years All these reasons led him to take an anti-religious stance, which was also reflected in his literary characters afflicted with despair, frustration, and an inevitable bad fate.
