Abstract

The term gradation is one of the modern semantic topics of investigation . It reveals the nature of relatedness among opposite words named as pairs according to palmer , or as bipolar chains or the monopolar chaius by others. The study attempted to define the term and to confirm it origin according to the Arab ancient linguists taking the semantic domains as the field of our investigation . This was done to prove the procedural existence of this term among the Arab scholars starting from their classification of small fields up to meaning lexicographies or what is calledas subjects lexicographies taking into acconnt ATha`alebi`s (dead in 429 AH) Fegh Al-lugha & siru Al-Arabia where the term obviously appeared under the liexical term "grading".
