Abstract

The purpose of this study is todetermine the incidence of impacted thirdmolar and its distribution between the jawsamong Mosul dental students, in additionto the study of its relationship with thefamily history, habit and sex of the patient.The incidence of congenital missing thirdmolar and its distribution between the jawswere also estimated.The sample for this study consisted of165 Mosul dental students; their ageranged from 2025 years.The results revealed 46.06% ofimpaction third molar where the femalesshow higher incidence of impaction thanthe males and in the mandibular arch thanthe maxillary one. Patients with chewinggum and singing habits show less degree of impacted third molar than those withoutthese habits. A high significant correlationwas observed between third molar impactionand family history of the patient.The study also revealed that theincidence of congenitally missing thirdmolar was 12.57% and it is slightly higherin the maxilla than the mandible.
