Abstract

Mamluk era witnessed great development in the field of administration and governance in Egypt , and the Levant . It witnessed creation of new jobs instead of others. One of those jobs was Sultanates vice, who is considered second in power , Vice performs duties of Sultan whenever the Sultan is absent specially in times of war or Hajj or for whatever reason . Vice will remain in charge until Sultan returns.
position of Sultanates representative is considered a job founded by Ayyubid and Mamluk sultans afterwards. Vice became as a second sultan, who shared real sultan granting emirate titles , distribute fiefdoms, appoint employees, sign decrees and publications, implement laws, and lead army divisions in official processions. Viceroy of Sultanate was known as Guardian of the Noble Kingdom because it was his responsibility to manage the affairs of state in general, whether the Sultan was in Cairo or away.
