Abstract

Our damascene historian Al-azar is originated from the old city of med. He was born in Damascus, and it is where he passed away (d. 739 AH).
Al-azar wrote a single book titled awdi az-Zamn wa-anbihi wa-wafayt al-akbir min abnihi, with obituaries of its great noble sons. This book received the attention of Al-azaris contemporaries and successors and was used by many of them as a resource of information, and they have also criticized some aspects of the book.
Since 1928, Arab Contemporaries and orientalists showed interest in starting from its title and its time frame ending by its value amongst Islamic historical works.
This research aims to review the scientific efforts around Al-azar and his book, indicating its effects and value. In order to demonstrate that and to provide an addendum about these efforts the nature of the research required the study of the following points:
- The date and the reasons behind Al-azaris family departure from the Al-djazra to Egypt and the Levant
- The life of the Al-azar including his culture and activities.
- Al-azaris manuscripts of his book and the people who worked on them.
- Evaluating parts of the investigators' work on Al-azaris manuscripts for his book awdi az-Zamn and stating the advantages and the disadvantages.
- Referring to the unvalidated parts of Al-azaris history and its news about the Al-djazra region.
