Turkey's Position On The American Occupation Of Iraq In 2003, A Historical Study
Abstract
In this study, I tackled Turkey's position on the US occupation of Iraq in 2003, explaining through this the Turkish-Iraqi relations before and during the war. Due to the geographical position between the two countries, Turkey's position on the war, whether official or popular, has a great impact on the course of the Iraq war.Turkey is linked by religious, geographic and social ties with Iraq, yet Turkey does not want to lose its strategic ally, the United States of America, which offered Turkey too much temptation to resist. However, the Turkish government was unable to obtain a decision from the Turkish People's Assembly allowing it to participate in the war on Iraq and to provide logistical and military assistance to the United States of America during its war on Iraq. Despite that, Turkey tried in various ways not to lose its ally, the United States, by putting pressure on its parliament and obtaining approval for the use of Turkish airspace by American planes to pass through the airspace of Iraq.
